BMW i5 Electric Sedan Breaks Boundaries: Unveiling an Impressive 81.2 kWh Battery and Over 500 Km of Unmatched Range
BMW has showcased the upcoming i5 sedan, the first fully electric version of its popular 5 Series, at the 5 Series world premiere. Set to be available for sale overseas by the end of 2023, the i5 joins BMW’s electric vehicle lineup alongside the iX SUV and the i4 and i7 sedans. The i5 will come in two versions: a standard single-motor model and a more powerful twin-motor variant.

At the heart of the BMW i5 is its 81.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which is shared by both versions of the sedan. Designed to fit flat under the floor, the battery maintains the same interior space as the combustion engine 5 Series. With this battery, both variants of the i5 achieve a range of over 500 km on the WLTP cycle. The single-motor eDrive40 has a range of up to 582 km, while the M60 xDrive can travel up to 516 km on a single charge.
The single-motor eDrive40 generates a peak output of 308 bhp and 400 Nm of torque, which can briefly increase to 335 bhp and 430 Nm with ‘Sport Boost’ engaged. It accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 6 seconds and has a top speed of 193 kmph. On the other hand, the M60 xDrive features a front electric motor for all-wheel drive and delivers a combined power output of 509 bhp and 795 Nm of torque, reaching 593 bhp and 820 Nm with ‘Sport’ mode activated. The M60 accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 230 kmph.

The BMW i5 includes a ‘Max Range’ drive mode that limits the top speed to 90 kmph and disables certain features to extend the range by up to 25%. Charging options for the i5 include 11 kW AC charging as standard, taking around 8 hours and 25 minutes for a full charge. Customers can opt for a 22 kW wallbox charger, reducing the charging time to 4 hours and 25 minutes. The i5 also supports DC fast-charging of up to 205 kW, allowing a 10-minute charge to provide over 150 km of range and a 30-minute charge to reach 80% capacity.
BMW plans to introduce the i5 in India, following the launch of its previous electric models in the country. The i5 is expected to arrive in 2024 and will be positioned between the i4 and i7 sedans in terms of pricing.
