Beware of the WhatsApp Pink scam, a phishing campaign targeting WhatsApp users with a fake app update. Scammers send users a message claiming there is a new update for WhatsApp Pink and provide a link to download it. Once the user clicks on the link and installs the fake app, the scammers gain access to personal data, including phone numbers, contacts, and financial information. Mumbai Police has issued a warning about this scam.

The scam works by redirecting users to a fake website resembling the official WhatsApp site. After clicking the “Download” button, a pink-colored fake version of WhatsApp is installed on the user’s phone. The app then prompts the user to enter their phone number and password, providing scammers access to the victim’s WhatsApp account. This malware affects Android users, and there have been no official warnings for iOS users.
To protect yourself from the WhatsApp Pink scam, take the following precautions:
- If you have installed the fake app, delete it immediately through Settings > Apps > WhatsApp (with pink logo) > Uninstall.
- Change your passwords and update your banking information if you used the fake app, and report any unusual activity on your accounts.
- Avoid clicking on links in messages from unknown individuals.
- Only download apps from official app stores like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Be skeptical of apps offering new features or functionality that are not available in the official WhatsApp app or have not been announced.
- Keep your phone’s operating system and security software up to date.
Remember that WhatsApp will never ask you to update your app or click on a link through a message. If you receive such a message, it is likely a scam. By following these precautions, you can protect yourself from the WhatsApp Pink scam and safeguard your personal information.
